Atman cannot be realized devoid of thoughts. Thoughtlessness is not wisdom. The thinker, thought, and the world, is part of the illusion. The thought will not arise without form, time, and space. The form, time, and space will not arise without the mind.
The mind ceases to exist without the Soul which is in the form of the spirit. Therefore, there is a need to know the “Self” is not limited to the physical entity (you), but it pervades in everything and everywhere in the experience of diversity (waking or dream).
Deep sleep is the state of thoughtlessness, silence, wordlessness, silence but it is not considered a state of oneness because anyone can take a sleeping pill and will be able to get the state of oneness.
Thus, trying to imitate the state of oneness in duality by observing silence, thoughtlessness, wordlessness, or by yogic Samadhi or surrendering to the physical Guru, the Advaitic wisdom will not dawn. Without the Advaitic wisdom, ignorance will not vanish. Thus, getting rid of ignorance through wisdom is the only way to realize the ultimate truth or Brahman.
Remember:~
Some Gurus say find out the source of the thoughts and who is the thinker but by finding out the source of the thoughts and Who is the thinker? The truth will not be revealed.
Thoughts, thinker words, and the world in which thinker exists is nothing to do with the Soul, the Self. From the standpoint of the Soul, the Self, thoughts, thinker words and the world in which the thinker exists is an illusion.
The thinker and his thoughts and the words and the world in which the thinker exists are created out of single clay. That single clay is the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness.
The Soul is the Self. From the standpoint of the Soul, The thinker and his thoughts and the words and the world in which the thinker exists are an illusion.
You are the thinker. Your existence is limited to the dualistic illusion. The ‘Self is not you but the Soul, which is present in the form of the consciousness. The consciousness pervades everything and everywhere in the world in which you exist.
The world in which you exist will not remain as a reality when wisdom dawns. The wisdom dawns when you realize the ‘Self’ is not you but the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness.
The dream becomes unreal when waking takes place. Similarly, the waking (the world in which you exist) becomes unreal when you realize the ‘Self’ is not you but the Soul, which is the witness of the coming and going of the three states.
The seeker has to mentally become aware of the existence of the witness of the three states which is hidden by the ‘I’ and is always apart from the ‘I’.
It is hidden by the ‘I’ as its formless substance and it is apart from the ‘I’ as its formless witness. In reality, the formless substance and witness are one in essence. That essence is the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness. : ~ Santthosh Kumaar
